India is rapidly globalizing and has turned out to be the 5th largest global economy. However, this rapid pace of development has not come without serious environmental costs. The major mega-cities of the country including the national capital, Delhi is regularly featured in the top polluted cities of the world. A large proportion of India’s population living in various basins and is dependent on its natural resources and environment feels that their environs are undermined or compromised. The growth process and development models offer little hope for inclusive and peaceful “sustainable human development‟ in India, which is the need of the hour. Environmental medicine is producing results of possibly major importance also for occupational exposure, thus challenging mutual interchange. As an example, exposure to particulate air pollution in the general environment induces significant increase in mortality and morbidity. However, we need to understand how the risk varies with the physical and chemical characteristics of particles assessment to work environment risk assessment. A related major area of concern for India is the threat to food and water security, disease outbreaks and human health arising from climate change and unruly economic exploitation of resources. The need of the hour, thus, is to convince the various stakeholders about the importance and need for a “safe and healthy living and working space” for the people of India to take on environmental challenges. Occupational and environmental medicine has many years of experience of trans-disciplinary work, which is strongly needed for the climate change challenges.
To create understanding of the key exposures that air pollution and climate change can generate and result into morbidity and mortality.
Air pollution induced health impact using exposure, effect and susceptibility biomarkers
